Popova Sapka in Rep. of Macedonia is a large resort with 11 lifts (1 chair lift, 8 surface lifts) that offers skiers an incredible 1400 metres (4595 feet) of vertical descent. There are 30 kilometers of cross country ski trails at Popova Sapka. Info phone: +38 99421450

The handful of lifts are tired, but the freeriding terrain is extensive. Popova is also the base for Europe's only cat-ski operation – Eskimo Freeride. They'll take you to some truly epic powder terrain, including open faces and perfect forest runs, from €200  per day. A six-day ski pass costs €59.50 (£51).

Hotel Granit, a friendly hostel right on the slopes. They serve great stone-baked pizzas.

Most of the hotels have bars.  The military base is also open to visitors and offers large portions of food for low prices. Pizza and goulash are common and cost around £3.
